filed on Saturday, July 2, 2011. 3:12pm PT/USA
The defending champion Ahmed Aly Elsayed has set up an intriguing quarterfinal clash with the five-times United States National Snooker Champion, Tom Kollins, after the completion of the Round Of 16 matches in this year's Championship at the Prince Snooker in Brooklyn, New York.
Aly comfortably secured his quarterfinal berth with a comfortable 3-0 victory over his fellow Brooklyn player Ka Lai Cheung, while Kollins was pushed to the final colored balls in the final frame for his win over California's Michael Chan.
Kollins also appeared in the quarterfinals when this Championship was previously at the Prince Snooker Club back in 2009, and his performances are a testament to his longevity and huge experience at playing both high level national and international snooker. The 75-year-old holds the record break in the history of this Championship at 123, and during the group stage of this year's event he fired in a break of 52.
Ajeya Prabhakar's quest for a second Championship title is also on a smooth track as he despatched of Pravin Patel 3-0, and he will face Tim Lee in the quarterfinals, seeded four in the group stage, who battled past Kashif Rashid 3-2.
After a comfortable group campaign in which he was the number three seeded player, Henry Wong lost the first frame of his Round Of 16 tie against Bo Ye, but the nerves of the player from New Jersey calmed down and he went onto secure his third successive appearance in a United States National Snooker Championship quarterfinal by easily banking the next three frames for victory.
Wong will take on Chicago's Vaishal Talati in the quartfinals as he advanced into his first quarterfinal with a 3-2 win over the Championship debutant, 3-2.
The Group D winner Yan Y. Zhen has also claimed his place in the quarterfinals after being defeated at this stage last year, as the New Yorker got passed Tommy Chen 3-0. Zhen will play Laszlo Kovacs in the quarterfinals as he came through 3-0 against Kevin Wong.
The quarterfinal matches, which are also over the best-of-five frames, got underway at 6pm local time (3pm PT/USA).
