2019 IBSF World Snooker Team Cup

The United States has suffered a heartbreaking final black ball defeat to Thailand at the 2019 International Billiards & Snooker Federation (IBSF) World Snooker Team Cup in Qatari capital of Doha.

Playing in the round of 12 for a quarterfinal match against Pakistan, the United States team of Ahmed Aly Elsayed, the reigning United States National Snooker Champion, and the twice former champion Ajeya Prabhakar faced the tough Thai duo of 26-year-old Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon, a former professional player with a highest ranking on the World Snooker Tour of 67, and 41-year-old Noppadol Sangnil, who reached a career high of 84 as a professional on the World Snooker Tour.

Thailand went into a commanding 2-0 advantage as Thirapongpaiboon defeated Elsayed in frame one, and Sangnil overcame Prabhakar in the second frame. But the United States team played and won a fantastic doubles frame three to reduce the deficit to 2-1, and in the following fourth frame Elsayed, who is due to go for his fifth United States National Snooker Championship title in August, fired in a magnificent break of 95 to seal the frame against Sangnil. It was left to Prabhakar to clinch an amazing comeback for the United States, but he was ultimately thwarted as Thirapongpaiboon, who will no doubt have ambitions to reclaim a place back on the World Snooker Tour, narrowly got Thailand over the line by pocketing the final black ball to secure the frame and match 3-2.

The United States Snooker Association would like to thank and congratulate both players for their performances and representing their nation with distinction.
