Laszlo Kovacs was the sole United States player in action on the first day's play of the 2019 International Billiards & Snooker Federation (IBSF) World Snooker Championships, though succumbed to a disappointing defeat in his opening Men's event Group M tie at the Starlight Resort Hotel in Antalya, Turkey.

Kovacs was in action during the 4pm local time session against Mateusz Baranowski, but the 22-year-old from Poland proved too good for the New Yorker.

A second frame break of 60 and a run of 56 in frame three helped Baranowski cruise to a comprehensive 4-0 win.

The top three players from each Group qualify for the knockout stage of the Men's event, so Kovacs's opportunity to progress is still in his hands with better performances from his remaining three Group M matches.

The reigning United States National Snooker Champion, Ahmed Aly Elsayed, and the former two-time champion, Ajeya Prabhakar, will both start their respective Group campaigns tomorrow Wednesday, as will Nitin Mehta and Amitabh Seth in the Masters' event.
