The United States Snooker Association (USSA) would like to announce that a final decision on whether it is possible to stage a United States National Snooker Championship this year, due to the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, will be taken on September 6.

The USSA had previously announced that the 2020 Championship would be hosted at the prestigious New York Athletic Club (NYAC) over the Labor Day holiday weekend from September 4 - 7.

However, due to ongoing circumstances and feedback from the players, the decision has now been made by the USSA Board to postpone the Championship in September, and a Board meeting will now take place on September 6 to discuss the viability of staging the event at the NYAC in early November.

If a November Championship is still deemed not possible then the USSA will unfortunately have to make the decision to cancel the 2020 Championship, and therefore plan for the next Championship to be hosted at the NYAC in September 2021.

Alan Morris, the Executive Director of the USSA, said: "We still cannot be certain about the situation in regard to the coronavirus in September, so even if it was possible to go ahead with the original plan for this year's Championship over the Labor Day weekend, it seems very likely that there would be a much reduced field of players who are primarily from the New York City area — this would unacceptably diminish the Championship.

"Therefore we can only hope that there will be a change in circumstances, with the outlook appearing more favorable in September in order that we may stage the Championship in early November."

Morris added: "The Board of the USSA only wishes to stage a Championship with the confidence of all the players, and so this factor will play a huge part in whether a Championship can be played in early November — otherwise the USSA will regretfully cancel this year's Championship."

The decision on this year's Championship will be announced here on the SnookerUSA.com website on September 6.
