World Games snooker breaks-off in Birmingham

The much anticipated snooker event at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, has got underway, with Ahmed Aly Elsayed and Renat Denkha representing the United States in this international competition.

The World Games, which were first held in 1981 in Santa Clara, California, are an international multi-sports event for International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized sports that are not currently contested in the Olympic Games.

Billiards Sports, which were introduced into the World Games in 2001 when the Games were held in the Japanese city of Akita, are in the category of Precision Sports, and the snooker event is being contested alongside events for pool and 3-cushion carom, from July 13 - 17.

The World Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS) is the International Sports Federation overseeing the billiard sports at the World Games, with the International Billiards & Snooker Federation (IBSF) selecting the players who are competing in this snooker event.

Sixteen of the world's top amateur snooker players have come Birmingham who will represent thirteen nations from around the world, competing in a single elimination knockout format.

Referees from the Pan American Billiards & Snooker Association (PABSA) are officiating at the snooker event, with John Lewis from the United States, who currently also serves at the secretary of the United States Snooker Association (USSA), and Kevin Patrick from Canada.
