filed Sunday, September 3, 2023.   3:15pm PT/USA

Ahmed Aly Elsayed has been defeated by Zhang Anda in qualifying for the 2023 Wuhan Open, after the American took an early lead over his Chinese opponent in Leicester, England.

Aly took a fantastic 3-0 advantage over world ranked 55 Zhang, and at that point he must have felt confident that he could qualify for his first venue.

However Zhang narrowly won the fourth frame on the final black, and then the tide turned against Aly's favor.

Breaks of 89 and 63 got Zhang back on level terms at 3-3, and after the three-time ranking event quarterfinalist took frame seven, the match had to be taken off its table to be completed after the conclusion of the following match.

On resumption of the match, Zhang captured the eighth frame to wrap up the match 5-3, and book his berth in the Wuhan Open which will take place from October 9 - 15 in Wuhan, China. (Match scoresheet).
