Ahmed Aly Elsayed showed some tenacious break-building form during his first round tie of the 2023 British Open, however it was not enough to overcome Gary Wilson as the American was defeated by the world ranked eighteen player in Cheltenham, England.

In a match that was heldover from qualifying to be played at the main event venue, Aly certainly got plenty of opportunities against Wilson, but it was only after finding himself 2-0 down that he started to put a performance in.

It is evident that the New Yorker is still trying to adjust to the uniquie conditions of playing on the World Snooker Tour, but he should have taken frame three on the final colored balls though strung a very fine 77 break clearance together to secure the fourth frame.

Last season's Scottish Open champion is a very challenging opponent, and his class eventually came through as he convincingly sealed the fith frame for a 4-1 success (Match scoresheet).

Aly commented after the match on his Facebook page that he had a great time but just was not his day. He acknowledged that he had chances, though will keep working harder and will come back stronger.
