The National Snooker League (NSL) is set to return in October for Season 2, bringing with it an expanded competition format designed to give snooker players of virtually every standard the opportunity to compete throughout the season.

Following an inaugural campaign that brought together 121 players from 13 clubs across Canada and the United States and culminated in a record-breaking CAD$52,500 prize payout, the NSL will begin its second season in October 2026.

For Season 2, however, the league is introducing perhaps its biggest of matches will now contribute toward two separate competitions.

One match. Two leagues.

Every registered player will compete simultaneously in the NSL Premier League and the NSL Challenger League.

The Premier League will rank players based on their raw, unhandicapped performances, creating a leaderboard designed to identify and reward the strongest-performing players across the NSL.

At the same time, those same results will contribute toward the Challenger League, where the NSL's new SPR rating and handicap system will be applied.

How good can you become when you have meaningful competitive snooker to play throughout the season?

SPR brings a new approach to handicapped snooker

At the center of the new system is the NSL's SPR (Snooker Power Rating).

Players begin with a rating appropriate to their playing level, ranging from elite national-level competitors to developing and novice players. That rating is then designed to change as performances are recorded throughout the season.

The United States has strong players spread across an enormous geographical area, while individual clubs can vary considerably in playing standard. A structured rating system gives developing competitors a reason to enter league competition while still allowing the country's strongest players to see exactly where they rank based on raw performance.

18 matches — without traveling across the country

The NSL format is designed to address that. Season 2 players will compete in 18 regular-season matches over approximately 28 weeks, with every match consisting of three frames.

All three frames are played, meaning results finish either 3-0 or 2-1 rather than following a traditional best-of-three format. Crucially, regular-season matches are played at each player's home club.

Players therefore do not need to repeatedly fly or drive across the country simply to participate in league play. Travel only becomes necessary for those who qualify for the major NSL Championship events.

Players whose home venue is not currently an NSL club are also encouraged to register, with the league working to connect them with an appropriate participating venue.

For U.S. players who want more serious competitive snooker without committing to national tournament travel every few weeks, the format offers a very different opportunity.

The NSL venue network already includes U.S. locations such as Chicago Snooker Academy, Colorado Snooker, Detroit Masters Snooker and Windy City Snooker, alongside participating Canadian clubs.

A Championship on U.S. soil

Once players have completed nine of their 18 matches, they become eligible to qualify for the NSL Premier League Championship, scheduled to take place in the United States in February 2027.

Players will then continue through the second half of the campaign, with all 18 matches counting toward qualification for the NSL Challenger League Championship in Canada in June 2027. The season-ending event is also expected to include the NSL Juniors Championship and Shootout competition.

Judgment Day will be back in May.

For standard ten-player Challenger groups, the group winner can qualify directly for the Championships, while players finishing second through fifth enter the Judgment Day playoff route for another opportunity to reach the season finale.

Technology becomes part of the league

The official NSL Mobile App is now available for both Apple and Android devices and will be used throughout the competition for scoring, scheduling and player performance information.

Match results recorded through the app automatically feed into the NSL's online standings and ranking systems.

The league's website has also developed into a central match hub featuring rankings, results, high breaks, venues, news and competition information.

An opportunity for snooker in the United States

Season 2 offers players 18 league matches, rankings to chase, a dynamic Snooker Power Rating, a Premier competition for the strongest performers, a Challenger competition designed to give players of different abilities something to compete for, and the possibility of qualifying for major championship events. A century-break player can enter. A 20-break player can enter. A player still learning competitive snooker can enter.

And all three can have something worth playing for.

Juniors are also being actively encouraged to participate, with eligible junior players paying only the annual NSL membership fee, plus the required official league polo, rather than the standard league entry fee.

Season 2 gets underway in October 2026, with registration currently open until September 30 at 11:59 pm ET.

After a first season that demonstrated what a continent-wide amateur snooker league could look like, Season 2 appears ready to take the concept considerably further.

For American players looking for more competitive snooker, more meaningful frames and another way to test their game beyond their local club, October could mark the beginning of a very exciting season.
